To set up SmartMemory for a project, fetch https://smartmemory.ai/claude.md
(same text as https://docs.smartmemory.ai/claude.md) and follow it step by
step. It installs the package, runs local setup, registers the MCP server for
the project only, adds the memory instructions and runs a smoke test.

A person can start it with one line:
"Set up SmartMemory for this project: read https://smartmemory.ai/claude and do what it says"

## What it is

SmartMemory lets agents remember decisions, conventions and past work across
sessions, and reason over a knowledge graph built from what they save. It
ships a Python package (`pip install smartmemory`, command `sm`), a local MCP
server, a hosted MCP server at https://mcp.smartmemory.ai/mcp and a REST API at
https://api.smartmemory.ai for direct HTTP calls.

## Core concepts

- **11 memory types in two layers:** the knowledge layer (semantic, episodic,
  procedural, zettel, plus pending, where every new item starts) and the
  expertise layer (decision, constraint, learned, opinion, reasoning,

- **Bitemporal:** every fact has an event time and a system time, so the
  history of "what we knew when" is preserved
- **Local mode:** SQLite plus a local vector index in `~/.smartmemory`, no
  servers to run, local embedding models
- **Hosted service:** FalkorDB (graph and vector), Redis (cache), MongoDB
  (account records and documents), sign-in through Clerk
- **Multi-tenant:** workspace, user and tenant isolation enforced at the
  security layer
